NYT article on the fire with an even closer look at the backdraft. Looks like the fire started in New York Style Eats. Most of the businesses on the block were affected but not all.

Yep. I know this area and street quite well and used to frequent many of the Irish bars. It could be someone wasn't happy about the new place...or, and my theory, Sidetracks was an inside insurance job. The Irish in this area are know for this. Many years ago they burned down Blooms for the insurance money. I used to hit Sidetracks back in the day before their hipster makeover in 2007 and it appears business never was the same. They used to have a monster crowd on the weekends full of all ethnic backgrounds but all native NYers to the area. With the new hipster crowd in Sunnyside, old Irish bars don't fly.

"Romantic Depot, a franchise of an erotica store catering to couples, opened at the end of October on the corner in a former Radio Shack. Neighbors were not pleased. Jairo Ruiz, 59, said he had peeked in the store with his wife about two weeks ago and had an immediate impression. “I said, ‘This is a hugely flammable place,’” he said. “Because a lot of stuff is synthetic, the cheapest plastic, you can tell when stuff is made very cheaply.” He added: “It was like a perfect storm.”"

HAH, sure thing buddy. Your first thought at the trove of leather and dildos is "Hey what a fire hazard!!"

mm hmm

Could be some sicko who did not want xxx in their neighborhood. Especially busy queens Blvd, full of kids and family.there is a back door to sidetrack, behind the old radio shack. Maybe someone got in through there.

Prime realestate indeed, wonder if its zoned for 2 floors. Sunnyside is an involved community, I doubt they will stand for it.

A similar fide happened in 61st street ,in Woodside. Burned half the block.

300K per year property tax bill:
https://nycprop.nyc.gov/nycproperty/...6&stmtType=SOA

Owner is RASELL REALTY CORP which is owned /registered by:

NICHOLAS LAMBADAKIS, ESQ.
19 WEST 44TH ST.
NEW YORK, NEW YORK, 10036

Seems like a LOT of real estate in Sunnyside is owned by Greeks who have long since moved out

So they can build pretty high. Across from the train tracks, the buildings are pretty high.

He probably said to his wife, "This is a super hot place!" and after the fire decided to amend it to "hugely flammable"

I once ate at Alpha Donuts, which is nearby around the block. Their Irish Breakfast is great!
