This cannot be sustained. Without the middle class, the city will collapse. The rich will only stay as long as the city is interesting and healthy. If it is nothing but mostly wretched poor people, then it would be nothing more than a Newark or Detroit and then they too will flee. After that, even the poor will look to get out because the freebies will run dry.
Socialism does not work. No matter how many times people try it, it always end up failing. I guess we have to learn that lesson the hard way.

Things vary on the ground by each individual household.
Know plenty straight, gay or whatever who have moved out of relatively low property tax NYC to Jersey, Connecticut, Westchester and Long Island. Each made that move for reasons specific to themselves after crunching the numbers.
Why a retired couple packs up and moves likely is entirely different than a single person or a married couple with a young family.
What keeps NYC population up is that in NYC, sick and the old are living longer and not dying in time. NYC is also a magnate for immigrants and migrant transplants who are trying to escape dysfunction in their former abode. Also NYC has the highest rates of out of wedlock births. All of which keeps NYC population up, and offsets those leaving. A loss of 45k can be replaced by out of wedlock births within one year. Expect NYS to loose an additional seat by 2020. Governor Cuomo needs to act fast to fix such situation. Create more jobs upstate, make incentives for people to get married, a partial tax abatement to own a home for first time buyers.
In other news, California stagnates. Texas and Florida is getting bigger.
If I have a choice, I would leave nyc too. Matter of fact, I will move out of ny state. I know no one cares whether I live in ny state or not, and that’s cool with me. I am simply voicing my opinion.
Many people leave and return though, often after expecting other places to have the same amenities or opportunity for such. Moving physically and adapting to a new place, culture, climate and people are two different things. Its a huge adjustment, among the biggest one can undertake.
I knew a few myself who moved from places like Florida or out West who returned after a year or two. Regardless though NY will continue to get more coming in, due to opportunity, culture and the fact its a world famous city as its draw.
I relocated to NC in 2011. It is true since I am planning to return also. I am advising those who have not left NYC yet not to relocate to the south. Even in a Blue city the political climate and the deep divide not only between rural vs city but everything else and well.
Can't wait to leave. Who the hell would want to voluntarily stay in this liberal, socialistic hellhole? I need to finish my 20 year sentence then i'm out.
