My sister stayed in a hotel in the Flower District (28th St. between 6th and 7th). Can't remember the name of it, but looked fine from the lobby, which was all I saw of it, and she didn't have any negative feedback. I'm sure she stayed there because she got a good deal, but IMO it was a pretty good location to get around. Near a few subway lines, plus walking distance to the Highline and other Chelsea spots. And walking distance to Times Square as well.
I just looked on a map and it may have been the Hilton Garden Inn or the Fairfield Inn and Suites by Marriott.
Mostly you will see a bunch of pretentious rich snobs pretending to be cultured. You wont see any culture unless you come out to the outer boros, or hudson county NJ.
but you can still enjoy a musical, and dinner.
As for hotels, you probably going to have to spend lots of money and get at midtown/times Square hotel. What other choice you have ? Anyone will do honestly.
As for show, Wicked, Lion King if still one, and I think there is Aladdin now. You can ask about the plots at the ticket booth. I am sure you know what to pick.
February is still low season for hotels. I like Omni Berkshire on 52nd and 5th.
An 18 year old would probably like Hamilton, Dear Evan Hansen, Wicked, Mean Girls or Frozen.
I remember seeing something a few years ago that showed that the lowest occupancy rate time for NYC hotels was the first week in February. 60% or something like that. Should be able to get good deals.
I'm a big advocate of guidebooks. You may not want to buy a bunch for just a weekend trip, but you can borrow them from a library.
Your daughter might like to visit the Costume Institute at the Metropolitan Museum, as a break from high culture. For quick bites, instead of pretzels, do a little research on interesting fast food, such as the Xi'an chain of Chinese places.
