Yeah they have no qualms wasting the time of thousands of applicants, each of which spends a couple hours applying for each position. The disrespect today towards job applicants is almost phenomenal and it is certainly abusive. Then there are Applicant Tracking Systems that screen peoples applications out based upon various criteria. Then you have those "Optional" questions like are you a female or are you Hispanic?

It's like a full time job just learning how to navigate your way through all the roadblocks and most of the roadblocks are completely invisible and virtually unknown to the applicants.

Another big time waster is attending Job Fairs. If the local colleges like CUNY have a booth, do not even bother attending if you really want to get a job. When the colleges have a booth stay clear because the entire job fair will essentially be a hoax.

Also if colleges have a booth, government will also have a booth, and it is essentially a hoax.

Join the Dem party, volunteer for a local council critter's campaign. Be a good little suck up, and maybe they will put a word in at an agency for you.

I assume these jobs, like many of the jobs in the corporate world, are filled becase of nepotism. I have a good friend that works for the city/in social services. The vast majority of her coworkers were hired largely becase “they knew someone”. Likewise, the most recent hires at my company have come by recommendations from other coworkers. THis is one of the reasons why it’s harder for people that are outside of a network to break in. Of course you need experience, credentials, etc but when you “know someone” who works there it’s a huge leg up in getting called for an interview.

Every single job I’ve gotten- and I work in “tech”, with the exception of my first job out of college (which took MONTHS for me to get and this is with a degree from one of the best Universities in the US) I got becase I knew someone who worked there or used to work there.

To the people on this thread that are complaining about these city jobs being next to impossible for working class whites to get, I don’t see you being equally outraged about how difficult it is for blacks/Hispanics to get corporate jobs.

These are positions for which I am qualified--for example, a job advertisement says 53 WPM is a must but I can type almost twice as fast. I only apply for jobs that my current skills make me an excellent fit for as well as my education (B.A. in Jurisprudence, MSc in Law and Legal Policy). I am great at legal research, drafting, analysis, clerical duties, etc. I am also fluent in two languages (Spanish and Italian) and all these jobs postings say "foreign languages an asset."

In the past I have worked as a legal translator, an executive assistant, and I now work as a consultant in a niche legal-related field.

I've applied for positions like investigative analyst with the CCRB, production typist for the law department, trial preparation assistant, clerical support etc. These are entry level positions whose requirements meet my qualifications and whose salaries are actually lower than what I earn now but I want to work for the city because of the work/life balance and pension.

I've not been called back for any of them. And yet when I have to deal with these places in person or with other city officers/workers, I can't help but see that the people are so woefully incompetent. For example I was in the Queens county clerk's office and had to practically battle with someone to get up from their desk and notarize a document for me (!). My dad worked for the DOT for 33 years and he said some of his coworkers sleep all day, and he's even shown me video.

Why is it so hard to get a call back from the city? And why does it seem like people who DO work for the city are awful? Is anyone hiring?!

No, the majority of the staff positions are filled thru civil service tests. It's highly competitive, so getting a high number on these lists is imperative. Since the Bloomberg years, there has been a concerted push to eliminate provisional jobs to fill them with people who take civil service tests to ward off nespotism. There was a recent Long Beach court case which triggered all of this if you care to look into the matter.

It's the management positions that are filled by nespotism qs there are very little policies to regulate who gets picked.

What if I'm a temp working in a city agency and my list number is 1267? I've already been informed that I'll be converted into provisional in the near future, which will probably hold me over until I take the next clerical associate exam? I'm far from a stellar test taker and probable could've received extra time due to having a disability, but I wanted to be on equal footing with everyone else. My final adjusted score was 82.60.

Additionally, I'm white. Am I doomed for just temping if I didn't receive a stellar score on city tests?

LMFAO!!!

I remember going to a few of those when I was fresh out of college. One of the best one was when I wasted my time and money hopped on the LIRR to Westbury for a Jobfair. Waited in line for about an hour and once i got in all the companies took 1 look at me and told me to apply on line like I couldn't do that without wasting my time and money.
