I think the fireworks this year partially malfunctioned due to the rain...
Only the upper level had fireworks while smoke was coming out from the rest of the tower.

That ball should drop every year no matter what.

Yeah. And if anything, it's getting more fancy with musical guests and concerts. I still remember when it was just a bunch of people standing around drinking and eating. They weren't even allowed to bring boom boxes back then but ironically they were kind of lax in what other things you could smuggle in (i.e. drugs).

Yup - and the headgear made an entire night being stuck in one spot that much more bearable.

You could see in the crowd many folks looked happy when it was over. I predict the lowest turnout ever next year...

Yup, me too. Now we have corporate sponsors (hats), too. But it is iconic and as much a part of NY as the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade which has also been totally commercialized and also isn't going anywhere.

I actually hope they continue it because for me -- it's comedy. This year especially, 8 to 10 hours (or more) of people standing around in the rain accomplishing nothing.

Why would you get rid of it? The majority of people (>50%) in the US are old fuddy duddys (including my parents) who don't go to or host parties and their New Year's consists of watching the ball drop on TV. There is literally nothing else for these people to do

Sadly, and I hate to admit this, but I have become one of those fuddy duddys....and the last few years, I would rather stare at the worm in the bottle than watch the ball drop on ABC.

As a former bartender, I can attest to the fact that NYE is indeed “amateur night.” Unless I’m going to a private party I’d much rather stay home.
