Just curious.
I have an appointment for an interview with the DOT coming up soon and I was just wondering what the process is like. Is it an interview and a call back for the physical at a later date? Will they give an offer on the spot? If I do well is it a possibility that the physical will be same day? Never been through the hiring process w a city agency before. Thanks.
Usually is an in person interview, and tends to be panel interview, meaning there are at least 2 people present to interview you. On top of that, the questions are pretty much prepared ahead of time, and all candidates will be score individually by each interviewer. They will add the total score, and the highest will be consider for the position.
After you finish your interview, ask them how long it will take to hear back from them. Usually if you are selected, they will reach out to you in about a week. If after one week and you still haven’t hear from them, then is likely you are not selected, but sometime could be one and half week. So don’t give up right away after one week. Give additional 3 business day, and if still nothing, then continue looking for another job.
Even though thank you email is not necessary, but I think is a good practice and helps you add some bonus point if interviewers were actually deciding between you and other candidates.
Ask questions about the job. What you are expected to do? What the work environment is like? Who your manager is? How is the management style is like? Is it micromanage? Think of questions that you would like to know before you start working if you were to be hire for the position.
Last but not least, be yourself. Talk to interviewer like how you would have a normal conversation with your friend, but of course, no slang and be professional whenever answering questions. Don’t use terms like, you know man...I don’t like this and I don’t like that. I hope you know what I mean.
Take this interview as a tour, as a way to simply have a nice conversation with the hiring managers.

I interviewed with DOT a few months ago. It was 2-3 people...they basically ask you questions one by one and they basically don't say anything to you other than the question. Once you answer, the next person asks another question for you to answer.
