I've never shopped at Wegmans but supposedly it's supposed to be really great.

NAVY YARD, Brooklyn (WABC) -- Wegmans, the beloved supermarket chain with locations across the northeast, is opening its first location in New York City -- and hiring more than 500 employees.

The chain's new 74,000 square-foot location will open at the Brooklyn Navy Yard on Flushing Avenue. Along with a supermarket, the new Brooklyn Wegmans will include 100 seats for the in-store market café and bar that serves food, wine, beer and spirits.

Can they build this place in any more of a pain in the a$$ location to get to? Why not just build it on Randal's Island?

Hope there's plenty of parking if it's in some out of the way place.

Well, there's a good lot of jobs at the Navy Yard, so I reckon that's a lot of the mainstay purchasers along with all the housing in the area.

Also makes me think of the Fairway way out in Red Hook which isn't close to any train station.

Just heard Wegmans coming to the Brooklyn Navy Yard.
Heck, the last time I worked there the ships were dry docked out on lifts and being painted.
I remember the old ballistics launching Frigate named " The USS Stump " What a sight to see.
State of the art Digital Electronics for the time. Stump was decommissioned 22 October 2004.
Anyway, I also thought what a strange place to shop but why not utilize the space.
Just as long as they don't charge for parking I'll sacrifice the ride time to come shopping.
Otherwise.........screw it.

Wegmans really only does "big" stores, that is they won't compromise the *experience* to shoe horn a store into a less than suitable space.

Most Manhattan supermarkets are crammed into spaces designed for general retail and it shows. Poor layouts and so forth make for a bad shopping experience.

Having grown up on Staten Island where supermarkets are huge things, found those in Manhattan puny and often infuriating. Everything and one is on top of each other and you can't find things logically.

Many others do so as well. If not NJ, there is Conn, Westchester or Long Island. Granted some do their shopping out there while at their weekend/country place. Others either drive their own ride or rent and go across the river to NJ.

One thing you do notice is outside of NYC things cost less, sometimes much less. This even from the same supermarket chain.

Very excited for them to open, best supermarket ever...although not cheap.

Funny thing is that it might still be faster for me to get to the one in Woodbridge, NJ...since BQE traffic is always a nightmare. But we'll see...
