I am looking for a new apartment/condo that is quiet - with good soundproofing between apartments (both next to me and above/below me). with poor or no soundproofing there are always risk running into:

in a paper thin drywall 1950 apartment, neighbor thudding whenever I use water; in a multi family condo (drywall), neighbor woke me up at 3 or 4am everyday with their slow paced pounding in bathroom; lead foot neighbor woke me up from above every 2am as he walked around and around; neighbor (below) thuds when I walk;

in these experience, living on top floor is better than other scenarios, but you still will be woken up if the neighbor below can hear you.

yesterday I spent a night at New York EDITION hotel (5 Madison). it was so quiet I couldn't hear anything.if not all the neighbor rooms are empty, I guess their rooms are soundproofed. is there a condo building that have similar grade sound proof in NYC / NJ? Any suggestions?

Are you looking to rent or buy? If you own a condo, you can soundproof any place with cork tiles (it costs only slightly more than wallpapering it).

Depends on the building. Some people say all pre-wars have better soundproofing but that's not always the case. I'm in a 1940 building that has poor soundproofing between ceiling/floor. The wall to wall soundproofing is fine. But I'm still woken up by the people above me if I don't use earplugs and white noise machine.

There are some stately pre-wars in Manhattan that have amazing soundproofing. I'm not sure if it just comes down to construction quality or what.

I have also heard that concrete elevator buildings are better soundproofed. But then I've also heard of some new construction that I think is concrete where you can hear everything.

So it seems it would be on a case by case basis. I think.

You could also try Google. I did a brief search and this plus some other articles came up. https://www.apartmenttherapy.com/way...estions-171822

Melatonin is an inexpensive over the counter alternative until you find your dream apartment.

Eating a banana before going to sleep DOUBLES your natural serum melatonin level! Silicone ear plugs are also useful, if you can tolerate them (I tend to get ear infections, so not for me for longer than a couple of hours, the length of an average rock concert).

Mack’s silicone earplugs plus white noise machine means I can sleep through any footfall noise.
