Looking at apartments that would require a transfer L to 5 at Union Square to get from bk to UES. Does having to transfer for your everyday commute end up feeling like a burden, or is it pretty common?

Each transfer increases the opportunity for problems and delays. If you work on UES you should live near a green line in BK or in Astoria/LIC.

I think having a transfer is pretty common but the more trains you need the higher the likelihood of running into a delay on one of those lines.

More like the 4/5/6 in the Bronx or Harlem.

Or perhaps the F, N, R, or W in Astoria or Long Island City.

There's debates on this, but I'm assuming the BX is not an option for 90% who post here. In addition o have found the BK commute going uptown on 456 is FAR more tolerable than BX commute going down in the morning.

I used to take 4 train from Crown Heights. Rarely any fights or arguments everyone got off downtown. Smooth ride.

Going Downtown on the 4 from BX consistently drama rude savages fights and arguments.

Over 20 years riding subway.
Lived in a two fare zone ( minimum 1 hour ride ) for years.
It was a drag during holidays, bad weather, subway repairs.
The ride could run as long as 2 hours but that's the price if
you want to live in New York City. You get used to it quickly
and if you get to meet and make friends.

People transfer. It's what New Yorkers do.

I have two options

1: do the whole thing on the m101 bus, which is always overcrowded and awful

or

2: do half of it on the m116 bus which is usually much less crowded and late and the other half on the B/C train

I just get on whichever bus gets there first. So sometimes I do a transfer, sometimes not. The time ends up about the same on average
