“Western Queens is in an infrastructure crisis. Everyone knows about the huge delays on the 7 line which is creating dangerous conditions on the platforms, meanwhile 20 years ago we were promised this station,” City Council candidate Brent O’Leary said. “The money was already allocated by the MTA, so where is it?”

Completely useless station, you can already take the LIRR at Woodside or Hunter's Point, which nobody in Sunnyside actually wants to take anyways because they all take the cheaper subway.
7 train goes straight to Grand Central, stay on for 2 more stops and after a 123 train hop you are at Penn Station. Sunnyside Yards is literally in the middle of nowhere

It's useless if it's just the station by itself and nothing else. Where it can be useful are:
- Transfer if Metro-North's Penn Station Access service also stops there (it has to go through the yards anyways)
- Sunnyside Yards development if it happens
- The buildings just northwest of where the station is proposed finish up
- An expanded CityTicket program or something similar where the price differential for in-city rides differs less from the subway
- If NJT Trains can negotiate a stop there, but no further (turn back at the yards after the station)
- Major development and rezoning for the industrial area just south/east of the tracks and yard
You don't necessarily need all of those, but if none of those happen, then it's not really worthwhile.

Wanted to add one more comment to your post in case anyone got the wrong idea: the Hunterspoint Avenue and Long Island City LIRR stations, which is probably what you're referring to when you say Hunter's Point LIRR stop, does not go into Manhattan.
The LIC LIRR station is actually an infrequent terminal station and the Hunterspoint Avenue stop an infrequent stop along the way to the terminal though it would certainly be sensible to have a Long Island City stop further to the west that is on the way to Penn Station but after the LIRR services would split between Grand Central and Penn Station service further northeast. The Sunnyside Station can serve that purpose, but of course, that by itself isn't useful without the other things I've mentioned in the previous as Woodside can do the same. A nice LIC station deeper in the heart of LIC and actually going into Manhattan would also be really useful if the Montauk branch from LIC to Jamaica were actually electrified and used for passenger service. This is also probably the a sensible pathway for a straight shot to JFK.
Use it or lose it? This is so stupid. Why can't you allocated to something else? I'm pretty sure you can do that, it all comes down to the politic.
