It's sad the amount of money I waste in cabs just to avoid the train. Damn shame.
I hear ya! I sometimes do the same on the weekends. I either keep it locally and if i do go downtown i take an Uber or Via.

I lived and worked in NYC from my 20's through my 50's. I lived in Brooklyn and Staten Island and worked in Manhattan and Brooklyn. I always enjoyed it. I mainly took the subway and walked. I enjoyed walking over the Brooklyn Bridge and walking through neighborhoods in Brooklyn Heights, lower Manahttan and the Village. There was always lots to see and places to eat good ethnic food for not much money. Enjoyed free summer concerts, window shopping, browsing the bookstores, drinking in bars with friends. When I retired and relocated to Southern NJ, 10 years ago in my early 60's, I never returned to Manhattan or missed it. Got used to suburban, uncrowded living pretty quickly.

It got better as I moved deeper into my 20s because my parents were mad strict when I was young. Trains are more expensive now, but my income is higher.

The prevalence of newer stores like Aldi, Family Dollar and Dollar Tree makes things more affordable than there just being those regular old, $1.29 "dollar" stores. My wardrobe is complete and I don't have to buy any more work clothes, so the amount I spend has really declined.

I became able to buy beer and vodka without 2 forms of ID so I started drinking more but am now cutting back and quit malt liquor cold turkey. Maybe when I was 25 or 26 I started hitting bars to hear live music and I drank pocket vodkas in the bathroom to party. Then later on I stopped because I was becoming fat.
