Hundreds of city schools aren’t making the grade, flunking city health inspections, a NY1 investigation found.

The worst offenders?

I.S. 227 in Queens, one of the borough's most sought-after schools. Health Department Inspectors found 140 mouse droppings there, including in the students' dining area.

There was moldy watermelon at P.S. 277 in the Bronx, and at PS 42 in Queens, moldy green beans.

In all, inspectors last year found roaches crawling on 99 lunchroom floors, fruit flies in 80 cafeteria kitchens, and in 22 drains, flies where serving utensils are washed.

"It's not acceptable," said Richard Carranza, New York City's schools chancellor. Adding, "kids should never be served any kind of food that is not safe."

According to the records, in the first eight months of 2018, 934 schools had critical health code violations—the kind that would get any restaurant shut down.

That compares to 1256 violations in the 12 months of 2017 and 1456 violations in 2016.

"School food is important because for many of our students, that's where they get the majority of their meals. So we take it very seriously, and we will continue to make sure that what we serve is absolutely the top quality," Carranza said.

Some of the results are nauseating. Inspectors found evidence of rat activity at one school and evidence of mice at 336 others.

"I've been in New York City for 10 months. There's mice everywhere. There's rats everywhere. So this isn't just about schools. This is, this is an issue that happens in a large city for us. We're taking it very seriously and we're putting people and processes in place to prevent that," Carranza said.

if carranza is correct that many students are getting most of their calories in school, that means there's many students who are literally starving. the breakfasts are at most 400ish calories. the lunches, even if you topped everything and drank your milk, are going to be hitting 900 or so. even during the elementary years, 1300 calories 5 days a week isn't enough for any child unless they're a literal midget

if starvation for kids truly is an issue in NYC, we should be providing food stamps in the form of actual food so the parents can't be irresponsible. boxes of peanut butter, bread, cereal, powdered milk, beans, canned vegetables, jerky, fruits. it's not ideal but it's better than a starving child

Carranza said that MANY children get MOST of their calories at school. You have misconstrued that to mean that these children get ALL of their calories, 1300, at school when in fact the statement allows for 1299 calories outside of the school. No child needs more than 2500 calories a day.
