I'm hearing 5-8 inches. I can't believe they are closing.

Fools!

Forecast for tomorrow is sunny, tonight mostly rain. But now parents of certain demographics of NYC public school system (who often can least afford it) will have to scramble to find a baby sitter, or take a PTO day to watch their kids who should be in school.

I'll say it again; this city and many of those in it have gone soft.

Is it even gonna be cold enough tonight in the city for snow. I'm thinking it will mainly rain.

They said 6-10 inches, but now it's more like 6. I bet it'll be all of 3 inches.

meh. you make a decision based on the best information you got.
The National Weather Service throws up a Winter Storm warning (which is the highest level) then you play it safe.

It is raining on the UES, and has been doing so for much of the evening. Unless temps drop greatly within next few hours there isn't going to be much if any snow.

In fact it is so warm outside have the windows open because heat is blasting as if it is < 30F outdoors.

Back in my day they waited at least until overnight to see how bad things really were; these eejits today shut things down a day ahead, then are stunned when no storm arrives, and or isn't bad as predicted yet schools are still closed.

More to the point we went to school (and yes, they were open) on days with far more snow on ground, or falling than today's precious little snowflakes seem to be protected from doing. Yeah, it took about half an hour before everyone was out of all those heavy coats, snow boots and so forth before class could begin, but still

We had recess indoors (the gym) but otherwise school day proceeded as normal. If snow had stopped we went outside to school yard for recess. Usually we had some sort of snowball fight and or played dodge "snow" ball. Nobody died, no one got hurt.

Back in my day they would never close schools for an anticipated 6-10 inches that was going to fall the NIGHT before. And its going to be 40 degrees tomorrow. City is getting way too soft.

Of course, for all that the administration claims to care about working families, closing schools hurt the working class the most. They can't afford child care in cases like these, and many parents will have to take a day off that they cannot afford to lose. It would be one thing if this seemed necessary (and, note, yes you make decisions based on the best known evidence at the time, but there is plenty of time to rescind the notice to close schools now), but this seems far from necessary.

My parents (like others) usually had 1010 WINS on early in the AM to see if or what schools were closed. That is if it wasn't announced by time 11PM news had finished.

This or phone calls would be made to the school and find out what was going on. My parents like my aunts/uncles and nearly everyone else I knew (adults with kids) had the same attitude; if school is open, you're going...

Only kids who didn't really make it in are those who relied on school buses and they for whatever reason weren't running, and their parents didn't have means to drive them to school. Given much of Staten Island is hills and (back then at least) plenty of areas had no sidewalks if the bus couldn't get up (or down) said hills to complete a run, you could understand why some kids were kept home.

Unhappily for me ours was a two car household so that was that.

Same here. And Eye Witness News at 4-5am if, like you mention, the news didn't break earlier either via broadcast or mass telephone recorded message. And things worked out just fine.

In the age of social media, there is even less of an excuse for such a decision.

I have to say I am torn on this.

Of course I have commuted through snow before, but how fun is it on public transportation?

Let the kids get a breather.

I don't know about you guys, but when I get on the train in the AM, at least 50% of the riders are parents taking their kids to school.
