FIT (Fashion Institute of Technology) is a school that teaches people how to design beautiful things.

Ironically, the school is located in an incredibly ugly, brutalist building that looks like a dirty prison, torture chamber, or sewage treatment plant.

Maybe FIT should consider..

a) Renovating the ugly brutalist building.

b) Demolishing, and replacing with a bigger/better building, and selling/renting the excess space for a profit.

c) Moving to a better looking building.

better looking building?? LOL. Who cares! All that matters is that they are getting a proper education.

FIT is not a private school. It's not like NYU or Columbia that have billion dollar endowments and can build more buildings, etc.

Do you want NYC, NYS and USA taxpayers to foot the bill for a cute/sexy building??

Other public schools - like CUNY Baruch - are in decent looking buildings.

Maybe FIT could at least renovate their brutalist eyesore.

Practicality beats appearance. Plus it's not like the FIT school + students designed the place back in the day. What a nightmare that would be.

It is a really ugly building. All the buildings built around that time in that style are horrible, and there are a lot of them on various college campuses. But it's too late now!

Are you going to make sweet love to a building?

Yes, it's ugly in 2019 but too expensive apparently to renovate.

Depends on the air rights.

Considering that midtown Manhattan is prime real estate, FIT could tear down the ugly building, and build a bigger, taller better looking building, and rent/sell the excess space for a profit.

For example, in 2000, they demolished the bland NY Coliseum at Columbus Circle, and built the Time Warner Center.

Hmm. Good point.

There was a large building on Hunter College's west side campus that was worth a huge amount of money, so the state kicked out the program that was housed there. I assume the building will get knocked down and a huge new tower will be built instead.

Maybe it should stay ugly. For all we know, it could be one of the greatest sources of inspiration for students.
