I don't understand how this happened. Was she just unlucky? Or extremely drunk? And no one was able to help her or alert the train conductor?

I thought this might be a clue -- that she was out "blowing off steam." Maybe that's euphemism for really drunk. “She was working and just trying to make it. She had a bad day at work, some customer was rude to her, and she went out to blow off some steam and she slipped on the subway and fell,” McDonald said."

In any case, it's a horrible way to go.

According to the article this happened at 3:30 AM! So it is possible that there was nobody around to help her or alert the train conductor. In any case, this is a very sad event!

They posted a video here:

But you're right - it is interesting and sad! How is it that a girl gets struck by another subway? Didn't anyone see her fall in and call 911 for the power to be cut?

Even at 3:30 AM there are people at the Union Square station. I was actually there not too long after, I'm surprised I didn't notice anything.

Very sad news regardless, I just hope that nobody saw and did nothing.

Have mentioned this several times in forum; platforms at Union Square are very narrow, and in some instances that distance is more still because of stairways etc... If the platform is crowded (which it often is) you have to walk very near the edge to get past people, especially if they don't move.

Still am rather interested in how investigation will roll and say how conductor exactly didn't notice this poor girl being dragged by doors.

Quite honestly once train starts rolling and someone is caught in doors there is very little time to stop that train. Even slowly pulling out of station it will clear platform rather quickly, then person either will be slammed against a wall and or dragged down into the tracks.

Back in old days you could see where emergency brakes were located in each subway car. So if anyone did see anything they could have pulled; but those days are long gone. Was thinking the other day don't even know if it is possible to activate emergency brakes from inside most modern NYC subway trains today.

3:30 am "blowing off steam" definitely means drinking, but what a tragedy. I always worry that's how I'm going to go.

This wouldn't have happened years ago when the conductor stood between cars and made sure everyone was safe. The old ways are the best ways.

There's something a little dangerous-feeling about the tracks in Union Square, how they curve and there's a major gap between the platform and the train until that extender thing is pulled out. I don't think that's on all the lines, though.

Just read entire NYP piece; poor girl wasn't caught in door as one posted upthread but somehow "wedged between train and platform". Though no less horrible can see how that could happen; again those platforms are narrow, but on the IRT line they also have wide gaps which is reason for the retractable extensions from platform to subway doors. Also reason for those "Mind The Gap" warnings.

Still a horrible thing to happen to such a lovely young woman. Heart goes out to the family, and may the deceased rest in peace.
