No, it's not about elitism, it's about common sense. Her parents are wealthy and will have to pay the full price for her college education. She will not receive financial aid. Since her parents are paying the full cost, she should attend an ivy league university. If she wanted to be a little different, she should have applied to Brown. She would get her "cool" points, while still attending an ivy.

The University of Michigan

Lower Division out of state cost:
(Freshmen/Sophomores)
$49,350 - TUITION & FEES*
$11,534 - HOUSING & MEALS**
$1,048 - BOOKS & SUPPLIES
$2,454 - PERSONAL & MISC.
Total cost for first two years: $64,386 X 2 = 128K

TOTAL BUDGET
Upper Division
(Juniors/Seniors)
$52,814
TUITION & FEES*
$11,534
HOUSING & MEALS**
$1,048
BOOKS & SUPPLIES
$2,454
PERSONAL & MISC.
$67,850 x 2 = 135,700

total cost: 263K

Yale cost:
Tuition and Fees $55,500
Room $9,400
Board $7,200
Estimated books and personal expenses $3,700
Student Activities Fee $125

Malia's education at Harvard will be over 310K. Sasha should count her blessings and matriculate at Yale.

Apparently, her parents are not on board with her attending the University of Michigan over Yale.

It's funny that you state the above, but her parents are not speaking about the University of Michigan; if anything, they are letting it be known that their daughter got into Yale as an early admit.
