I paid about the same for Best Buy to install and haul old unit away. They don't charge for delivery, only for installation and getting rid of it. I didn't really have a handy man handy, and I could have had the city eventually pick up the old unit for nothing, but I just wanted the whole thing done quickly and as painlessly as possible. Spending that amount was worth it to me. Having the store install it also "guarantees" the installation, in case it later proves faulty, which I have heard of happening, even if unlikely.

I hate to say this, but the store bought units are generally not designed to be fixed. Doing so may end up being more expensive than replacing it. If instance, I'm pretty sure they don't have fill valves to refill the refrigerant.

Window and wall units have no valves and you need to put a saddle valve on ...most amateurs end up pushing air in to the system when they fail to evacuate the air out of the hoses

Nothing yet, except research.
Definitely it will be a new unit, probably from Amazon or Wallmart, and I will use the handyman install. I installed this one, bought from Venting Direct online, but I was stronger in 2011. Just frittering around in a cramped corner has me in severe back pain. I can barely walk.

So this weekend was bingeing HBO while comfortably ensconced in a recliner with a heating pad and copious wine.

That sounds like good advice. Deliveries ordered today take a week or two so I might as well shop for sales. I just hope that yesterday was the hottest we get. It may be so.

Temperatures are expected to drop rather drastically on Friday and remain lower than average for the next week.

You own this apartment, correct? I wouldn't go cheap on this. Get a Friedrich, or another good quality brand. Anything you get from Walwart is likely to be junk. Amazon has some better brands, but I don't know if they save you anything on them.

I certainly would LIKE the most dependable and quietest, but I don't know that brand loyalty will get me anything. They switch brands like a three card Monte game. Everything is made in China or Mexico, probably the former.

Do some research. I'm sure Consumer Reports rates these things.

Try the Wirecutter.

Also, compare any quoted install to Handy. Not sure how they compare but you should check.
