What train station and hospital? There are two Gun Hill Road stations.
My guess is you are trying to get to North Central Bronx Hospital. The Norwood/Gun Hill area is notorious for armed robberies and drugs. There are a lot of beggers where Gun Hill Road meets the Bronx River parkway as well. The best thing to do if you must walk through there at night is be direct. Walk strait to the train station down Gun Hill Road with a co-worker. Don't use any ATM's or visit bodegas unless absolutely nessecary (You don't want people to know you have money). There is a public housing project across the street from the train station as well, never venture inside. The train station is brand new, they just renovated the old station which was horrible in condition and notorious for robberies. Much better lighting now and better entrances/exits. You can only catch the 2 train at this station.
The other is Gun Hill near Eastchester Road. The area around the train station is somewhat shady at night as well although not as bad as the other Gun Hill station. Again there is a public housing project nearby, the Eastchester Gardens. Avoid this. Use the same tips. The only nearby hospital I can think of here is Jacobi which is a VERY long walk at night. If you need to get to the train from Jacobi, simply take the BX12 bus to the Pelham Parkway train station. You can catch the 2 train and transfer to the 5 train at East 180th Street. This area is overall better then the other, unless you walk west or north from the train station, then it quickly becomes similar.
