I'll be visiting NYC with a couple of four year olds and would like recommendations for hotels/areas that are family friendly in Manhattan. By family friendly I mean quieter, safer and less crowded than most of Manhattan. Ideally we prefer not to break the bank to get all of the above. I know Upper Eastside probably meets my criteria but would like to know if there are other options. Brooklyn or Queens are fine if no more than 15 minutes away by subway. Thanks.
Also consider the Upper West Side, which is a lot less hectic and crowded than Midtown and primarily residential.
The Hotel Lucerne on W 79th and Amsterdam is absolutely lovely, safe, and in a neat location with lots nearby for kids.
A bit further uptown you might look at the Days Inn on 94th and Broadway, which is probably less expensive. But still very nice and also family friendly.
Both are also a quick trip downtown via subway. Naturally, cab or bus will take longer, but might be easier on the little ones.
You can always stay at a hotel Downtown Brooklyn. There's the Brooklyn Marriott (I really like that hotel) and the Sheraton, among other hotels in the Downtown Brooklyn area; they will be well within 15 minutes away from Manhattan by subway. Downtown Brooklyn may be the economic hub of Brooklyn, but its definitely quieter than Manhattan during the day, and miles quieter at night; in fact, much of Downtown Brooklyn becomes pretty dead during the night.
Thanks for the replies. I just saw that Uber and Lyft only have options for 1 car seats. Is there a good way to request a car with two car seats that does not require you to book days ahead?

Is there a reason why you are bringing 2_ 4 year olds to NYC? Are you on a sightseeing trip, a business trip, soaking up cultural activities, seeing relatives or maybe needing to visit some medical facility?

Mostly to visit family, but I want to combine as much sightseeing and cultural activities as possible. I lived in the city but that was back when Giuliani was the mayor.
Thanks everyone for the tip.
I have another question - is Coney Island worth a visit during the week? I understand that most of the rides and attractions are weekend only during this time of year but is there still enough to do with young kids during a weekday? How safe is it? I had some fond memories that I'd like to share with my kids but it has been so long.

is the area around the Sheraton pretty safe at night? I know it should be but just want to make sure.
