We call it the city. The north 1/3 is called uptown.

no, uptown is 60s-80's (and maybe 90's on the UWS).
midtown is 20s/30s-50s.
downtown is south of that.

harlem and north is its own world, more bronx than manhattan AFAIC.

Nope. Harlem is uptown. UES/UWS are still the city. Above that is uptown. Even the Bronx is sometimes uptown.

Sorry, I lived in nyc my whole life and u is wrong. Axe anyone who been living here for an extended time.

Harlem is Harlem. Ain’t nobody gonna say “I’m going uptown” when they going to Harlem.

It depends who you’re talking to. If it’s someone who lives in Manhattan, Uptown will mean UES/UWS. If it’s someone who lives outside Manhattan, then they might consider Harlem to be uptown.

To the Italians and Irish around Mullberry street and in the Village if they said Uptown Girl (like the Billy Joel song) they are talking about a classy blonde from the upper east side; but Harlem is also and most definitely known as uptown.
