Will the new MTA plan improve A and J/Z trains? (York: train, good)

Dunno about the “new MTA” aspect of your question, but I’ve already seen a few A trains roll through W 4th St. in lovely new rolling stock. Not sure if they’re the R179, but I suspect so, as those are replacing carriages on the A and J/Z lines.

So I would say the answer to your question is, at least to some degree, yes. God knows those lines need new rolling stock—or, based on the age of their carriages, they do. I kind of like the R46 carriages that make up the majority of A train rolling stock, as I like that you can get a seat that properly faces forward, which I’ve always preferred to a sideways-facing seat, even if they do take up more room.

New A trains have begun rolling out. I was on one Monday that didn’t even have ads yet. Really clean and larger than the old ones. Good air flow. Kind of like the 4 trains, but much larger. The 456 always seem cramped, even when not packed to the gills.
