Excerpt:
“The battle isn’t over,” says Maria Falcone. “My brother Giovanni said that the mafia is a human phenomenon, and like all human phenomena, it had a beginning and it will have an end. Well, despite the current crisis of Cosa Nostra, that end has not yet arrived.”
Opinion:
The mafia is a name given to a club of thieves. Thieves come in all shapes and sizes.
It is no different than any other club of immigrants that once stepped foot onto and kissed the ground of this great nation.
The first to arrive are long gone but not without having settled their offspring with great advantages that their blood
money did buy. They are in big business all they way up to government and are far removed from us second, third fourth arrivals
to this country ordinaries. The honest hard working man will always eek out a living and if talents provide rise to a comfortable
means of living without having to leave a wake of destruction in his path. For those that choose the quickest and illegal way of rise to
power it is commonly a short lived journey and ending up with blood on their hands; usually theirs. The paths to success are always
difficult at best for all with never a guarantee. The choice is always ultimately yours.
My path?
No different than the average Joe. Avoided trouble and clubs.
Just a sucker that worked and paid taxes for over 40 years.
A humble pension and absolutely no regrets. one of the lucky ones.

The mafia sure does still exit. The 0.1% and all politicians are the real mafia. And the middle class are the ones that have our pickets picked by them.
They also have a fairly high rate of snitching, so I don't take them (or any gang) seriously
That is true. People think that "Johnny Sacks" turning was such a huge thing; but in real life not so much, it happens all the time. Feds and even some local laws are so harsh now that once they've got you its either cooperate or they'll bring full weight down.
Even though Johnny Sacks cooperated they still wiped him out for most part (which is also true), and never missed a chance to humiliate the guy ( his daughter's wedding), and so forth.
What many don't realize is an arrest for prostitution, racketeering, or whatever usually comes after weeks, months or even years (in some cases) of undercover investigation. People get arrested thinking "what have they got, I'll be out before my dinner gets cold", then at arraignment *bam*, stuff comes out, page and pages of it.
Like Johnny S. says "you went through my sock drawer?"
At that point you either cop a plea/what you know hoping for something, or face strong possibility of doing some long time.

And Johnny only ratted on himself. In real life, tons of people in the mafia have ratted out entire crews.
The cooperation deals these days are so good for the rat, that you cannot expect omerta to be followed anymore
Thing is even outside of witness protection program Mr. Hill wasn't bothered (much) by "mafia" for what he did. The guy lived rest of his complicated life mostly not bothered, and died of natural causes.
