Opinion:
It's all based on Nation Wide Stats not per location.
$30 Grand in Erie New York will get you by but not in New York City.
You need $100,000 grand a year to live comfortably in this city and only the top per-centers are making that.
More like $350,000 and probably much more to live comfortably in NYC.
Income vs the lifestyle it buys is very different based on location and what you are looking at as far as benchmarks to judge purchasing power.. in cities like nyc we have lower income earners that do better than higher income earners because of welfare perks
Opinion:
Agreed. All one has to do is drop his income down from $30 to $20 grand and kapow the city helps by kicking in another $25 G's
in social assisted and sponsored program paid for by the hard working taxpayer and ups him to the equivalent $45 G's all the while
the poor scruff getting by on $30 Gs is just getting by as an honest dignified person. The subsidy programs are atrocious. But I was
referring to honest non assisted workable income .........but nevertheless agree.
Quite frankly this while "poverty at lowest levels...." report and hype is a crock.
No one exactly knows *why* numbers of those living below poverty line has decreased, but it could very well be that many simply packed up and moved, died, or otherwise aren't around.
There has been a steady outward migration from NYC of certain demographics; in their place has been a flow of highly educated, and financially better off persons.
You only have to look around streets of NYC to see there isn't any shortage of poor, busted and broke all over. Panhandling is up, subways are full of homeless, streets are full of people sleeping there or in doorways, parks, etc....
Dumpster diving hasn't decreased, but gone UP! Word must have gotten out about that t DAG on 80th and York because there are often three, four or more people deep going through those garbage bags on any given night. These aren't all homeless either; but whites including some elderly and middle aged people I know from the neighborhood.
Many of these "poor" persons (and that is exactly what they are if they would but admit it to themselves) remain in city for many reasons, this even though they likely would be better off moving elsewhere.
Those in below market rent regulated housing, NYCHA, or whatever subsidized housing have a sweet deal. They won't move unless or until things get so bad they cannot pay rent. Even then more to the point BdeB and his HPD won't hand them a check.
Dehumanizing undocumented immigrants and putting their children in modern day concentration camps.
Refusing to acknowledge Obama is even American (Birther theory).
Constantly attacking any and every Chinese company, even though the resulting trade war in hurting American businesses and farmers.
He had a history of not allowing Blacks and Latinos in his apartment buildings.
Completely labeling all Muslims or all Muslim immigrants with the same brush. Now most terrorists are disgruntled Americans (white), yet Trump doesn't condemn this ideology.
Trump's wanting to weaken and get rid of the EEOC laws (he's saying it's okay for companies to deny employment to gay people).
