They'll square off on the debate stage on NY1 on Tuesday, October 22, but few New Yorkers know there is a general election coming up to elect the city's Public Advocate — a citywide post meant to keep local government in check, and one that is first in line of succession to the mayor.
"There's just not a lot of enthusiasm when we've just elected the Public Advocate to office," said Joe Borelli, the Republican candidate for Public Advocate and a Councilman for Staten Island.
There has not been much action in the race between the two leading candidates: Borelli and Jumaane Williams, a Democrat who won the Public Advocate seat during a special election in February.
"Thanks to New York's arcane election law, Williams must run for re-election next month despite a decisive win in February in a special election, held after James was elected New York attorney general".
Unless, there was one last year and then another special election this February and now another one coming?? I can't keep this straight. I never vote anyway for these things...
It really is stupid and a collassal waste of taxpayer money.
First there was a special election to replace James. Then there were respective republican and democrat primaries last month to decide who will be on ballot in November. Who ever wins next month will fill out remainder of James term; end of 2021.
James was term limited out anyway, and thus couldn't have run again for PA in 2021, hence making her move to become AG. Who ever wins in 2021 and takes office in 2022 can serve two four year terms before they are forced out.
Nearly 20 million dollars or more spent on holding three elections in one year. More than entire budget for PA office. Get rid of the public advocate, the office has no real power other than to give holder a chance to run their big mouth and position themselves as next mayor, or whatever other office.

Yeah. I figured as much. I took a survey once and I didn't know any of the local elected officials but a few and don't ask me what the heck they even do. I never vote for any of these things. They all sound the same to me. I didn't even vote for mayor the last election because I knew De Blasio would win by default. But I'll vote for the mayor this time around and I always vote for the presidential election unless I think it's going to be a landslide.
