For those that don't know the broker end of it StreetEasy has gone to a paid model where brokers pay per day to post listings for rentals (sales are free). StreetEasy now has little incentive to police their own website and the repeat offenders are technically their best customers. I'm seeing luxury apartments with pools and rooftops being posted in what StreetEasy shows as a commercial building. Its disappointing that they went from what many viewed as the go to web site to an obvious money grab. Would it really be that difficult to come to the market with an actual legitimate website?

Wasn’t Streeteasy bought by Zillow a little while back? I’m sure the new owners need to justify the purchase price. It’s a shame because Streeteasy was a great site, and now it will be no better than Craigslist.

They were purchased by Zillow a few years back and since have been struggling to find a good system to monetize. Everything they are doing seems to be extremely short-sighted. Try getting an appointment for a sales listing and you find out that they sold your contact info to a shady broker with 0 connection to the listing.

Look for this to happen more and more online. A lot of these sites are funded by private equity bankers. They will give out lots of money, but then they want to see a return on their investment. That's when it gets ugly!

That sucks. I guess soon there will be another street easy. I know brokers who looked on that website for listings as well. Craigslist is just a directory for brokers, everything is totally fake. Fake pictures, fake prices, fake apartments.

So, what's a good site to find rentals?

If you are going through a broker find 1 or 2 that you like and stick with them. Most big real estate companies share rental listings. A seasoned broker will know the landlords and be able to find you what you are looking for or tell you is isn't going to happen without a miracle. And you can still look on street easy. I'm sure most apts are not fake yet.
