Hoping to see some fall foliage this weekend. Wondering if anyone has recommendation within 1 or 2 hours of NYC - in the Hudson area, NY or in NJ, Connecticut or Long Island
Hoping to have brunch so somewhere with seats/benches would be nice. A nice view would be a bonus. (or lookouts enroute with nice scenic views)
And somewhere on enroute with a playground for kids would be nice.
We are considering drving up the Hudson on the western side and returning on the eadtern side.
Eg. we are thinking of visiting 'Walkway over the Hudson' and Coldspring and stopping as needed.
The plan you're considering is quite good. If you're thinking of additional things to do along your trip going north on the west side, crossing the Newburgh–Beacon Bridge, and coming back down on the east side, here's a few possibilities:
On the way up the western side,
- Depending on where you're coming from and what time you leave, you can get snacks at the Japanese supermarket Mitsuwa before heading up
- Visit Storm King which is a large outdoor installation art grounds that you can leisurely walk through
On the way down the eastern side,
- Visit Dia:Beacon though this will keep you mostly indoors
- If you like a fairly short and easy hike, you can go for Arden Point and Glenclyffe
- If you like a short, but strenuous hike, you can go for Breakneck Ridge though you should be very comfortable with some steep (for the east coast) hikes as this isn't an easy one for anyone who doesn't go hiking much
- Kathleen's Tearoom in Peekskill is pretty quaint and I took some visiting relatives there who really enjoyed it

people rave about dia ... i was sorry we went . i found nothing of interest there at all as far as art ... the pepsi sculpture gardens , kykuit , philipsburg , lyndhurst are a far better choice

Well, sort of depends on what you're into, right? Dia does abstract and conceptual art of the last several decades, but especially of the 60s and 70s, in a modern gallery setting. Some people are really into that.

For fall foliage nothing beats ny botanical gardens right here ....we photograph it every year ....the best time is usually around 1st week in November.
The gardens and estates in sleepy hollow and tarrytown are another area we hit
