If that happens I'd move to SI.

It's up to Staten Island. Whatever makes them happy, I'm happy

Smaller tax base. Right now their part of a larger City. Now they would have to fund their own schools, roads, municipal employees, water, sewer, etc. If you had to pay more would you still move to SI ?

Keep in mind that smaller tax base also means a smaller population to have to support. If independent cities like Yonkers, New Rochelle, Rye, White Plains, Bayonne, Hoboken, etc. can stand alone, I can't see why SI couldn't either.

Not the first time they've tried to secede. They are the forgotten borough.

As an SI resident, I definitely don’t feel like our needs or represented well in the city govt... political nonsense aside, that fact is that SI is a vastly different place than the rest of the boroughs, with the exception of certain queens and Bronx neighborhoods... but the borough as a whole has very different needs based on infrastructure, types or properties, land use etc... SI is way more suburban than the other 4 boroughs, and it always feels like we must deal with laws and proposals that are good for other areas of the city, but miss the mark with SI.... with that said, it would take some serious thought and planning to see if SI could sustain itself outside of the city... I have a hard time seeing it work, but then again other counties work just fine, like Nassau , westchester etc... property taxes would obviously likely rise, but we wouldn’t be paying NYC taxes, but I’m sure there’s a whole host of other logistical nightmares to work out .... curious to see where this goes.
