I'm looking for street games that originated from NYC to teach a section on it in my PE class. Right now all I got is Stickball. Can any New Yorkers please help me out on this? What's a classic street game that maybe you played growing up? Thanks.
Oh man, I remember playing skully when I was a kid in the 90s. Wikipedia says that it died off in the 80s, but they don't know what they're talking about. Kids still play skully now in the school yards, or play a variant of it with quarters where they try to knock the other player 3 times or off the board. Kids used to melt their crayons in the sun and wax the inside of the bottle caps to put more weight and improve aerodynamics.
I guess it doesn't have much of a presence in Manhattan anymore since the city probably painted over the skully boards they had in the parks by now, but tons of elementary schools in the other boroughs have left them preserved.
Skully isn't really a sport though, so its not really appropriate for your class.
Strikebox - played but not sure if it originated in NYC.
