You do know that there are numerous companies that will come take a car off your hands within hours of a phone call, right?

Could be stolen cars or cars reported as stolen.

Take it to a junk yard or donate it. Many charities accept cars. Don't look for trouble.

a family friend once got a few thousand dollars in fines because many years earlier he sold the car ... the person buying it stripped it , never registered it and left the shell for dead .

the guy who sold it had no proof any longer the car was ever sold and when the carcass was found they identified the vin and came after him since he was the last registered owner .

I know someone that many years ago due a parent's illness was forced to spend months on end overseas. He left a car parked in the street which accumulated multiple tickets. Eventually the car was towed (as I assume it was reported as abandoned) and the car was eventually sold off by auction (which I assume covered part of the tickets). Several years later he did purchase a new car and had no trouble registering it at the DMV and wasn't asked about those fines on the other car (but there was a big gap between the registration of the new car and the old car being towed).
