It's been a long time since anyone could get away with paying the national minimum wage in NYC. Fast food places had too pay $9+ hour to get anyone to work. So market was working. But that wasn't good enough for the SJWs.

When my kids got a little older I took a low paying job in retail just to get out of the house a few days a week. I worked there for six years and we got 2 weeks paid vacation every year and little perks as well. 5 1/2 years into my employment there, the government raised the minimum wage. At first I was all for it and was practically cheering. I was a huge proponent for raising the minimum wage.

The next thing I knew, corporate started to take away all of our perks and told us they were no longer offering 2 weeks paid vacation. They cut all of our hours to part time and let a bunch of people go, leaving us with nothing but a skeleton crew. Shortly after, we were all doing the jobs of 3 people each, didn't have enough staff to clean the store and get products stocked on the shelf and customers were complaining. I quit shortly after because I ended up making much less money with all those cut hours and lost my PTO.

Thank God I did not need that job and was financially okay without that job. I shudder to think what I would have done if I depended on that job for food and rent. My store was not the only retail style store to punish all the workers when the minimum wage was raised. Most big, greedy corporations make sure they don't lose a nickel when the minimum wage gets raised and workers end up with the short end of the stick. I now changed my views on the benefits of raising the minimum wage. It ends up seriously hurting low paid workers.

Are you sure the increase in MW the only factor that changed?

You could say same about Starbucks, Sweetgreens, Gap, Fresh Direct, Amazon (mostly everything non-corporate such as warehouse, delivery, etc...) virtually all fast food places. And so it goes.

Fact of matter is young whites have other things do to for most part than work minimum wage jobs. Older whites you see are those who need money.

As it is many of these supermarkets or whatever places often have difficult time in finding workers, especially cashiers. First and foremost many simply cannot pass criminal background checks. Others even with aid of computerized cash registers have math skills of a two year old.
The only grocery store I recall seeing young whites work in is Trader Joe’s.

Nobody will admit it but most people are no-talent nobodies that get hired because they fit the companies discrimination protocols. A lot of jobs are mindless and unnecessary but the workers think they are indespensible and for some reason they deserve special treatment.

How about those Equal Opportunity grocery stores overstaffed with 170 employees and they are all Dominican? That is the NYC brand of diversity. It is embarrassing.

NYC is wimpy today thru and thru. Smug political opinions. Smug and spoiled brats who were trained to be perpetual victims. NYC has a bunch of soft foreigners complaining about pink issues while they continue to plunder the countries wealth from the natives. NYC is soft nowadays.

I was friends with the manager and she said that corporate was cleaning house because of the minimum wage increase. She told me the bean counters in HR figured out how to come out ahead of the wage increase so they would gain instead of lose money. The store I worked at had over 70 retail stores in NY State. They saved millions of dollars alone by discontinuing our paid 2 week vacations that we were receiving for years. Like I said in my earlier post, I am so glad I did not depend on that job to live. I was lucky that it was just a stint to get out of the house a few days a week.

horrible analogy, one of the worst I've read in teh interwebz.
again, it's SIMPLE economics - supply and demand. there are lots of nannies and babysitters out there. it's not a specialized job. you don't even need a high school degree. if you find a sitter that is a super duper child whisperer and there is a long wait list to get him/her, definitely he/she will command a higher rate.

there's tons of articles about how higher min wages reduces hours and introduces automation which will ELIMINATE the poor person's line of work. go look it up yourself. someone even provided an anecdote in this very thread.

Then they were likely expecting a downturn in business as well. They were going to be overstaffed with the downturn, plus a MW increase. But they likely let people go MW increase or not.
