Question for 2nd trick op, or anyone else who might know:

Let’s say that the higher-speed rail does go through and there’s a less than six hours trip from NYC to Niagara Falls and vice versa. In that case, does that mean OT is eliminated for that train’s crew? It’s less than eight hours at that point, but then the crew ends up on the other side of the state until they get on another train going back.

Following up on this, I heard that for Amtrak assignments that are over six hours long, the requirement is that there are two engineers on board. Is that what is currently happening with the over eight hour long NYC to Niagara Falls run? If so, does this mean that the operating cost then goes down with a less than six hour NYC-Niagara Falls run in terms of only needing one engineer assigned per train?

I don't know the rules, but I do know that when I went to Syracuse on the NYC-Toronto train, we sat for 20 minutes or so at Renssalaer/Albany to change crews.

I guess that was to prevent OT.
