The building, if it is the same building from 1829, has been extensively modified. There is a picture of it from 1898 (about 70 years after it opened) and the front is different, the roof line is different, and there are now seven windows on the side where there were none in 1898. I think some independent historian should evaluate exactly when the present building was built and/or modified. The sources that claim the bar has operated in this building since 1829 seem to all be from Neir’s itself, it’s owner, or reporters parroting the claims that it’s the oldest bar in NYC. A few years ago the owner was trying to get it landmarked (despite not owning the property) and it got a lot of media attention. I emailed a reporter who was writing puff pieces about the place and asked him what evidence does he have that it is the same building from 1829. He didn’t reply back.

I don’t doubt that a bar may have been on the site in 1829 but I am not convinced it is the same building.

How do you know he doesn’t know how to pour beer or eat pizza? Were you there to watch him? Where did you learn proper beer pouring and pizza eating etiquette?

'“Too much foam! Too much foam!” one happy patron chided.'

It's just something you know or pick up if you hang out in these types of places long enough.
There's a way of pouring beer so there isn't too much head. And who eats pizza with a knife and fork?
I know. I know. You don't want to stain your clothes, etc. but there is a way to eat pizza without staining your clothes and not resorting to a knife and fork.

Anyway, he comes across as a charlatan. Like Hillary when she couldn't properly swipe her Metro card. It's something you pick up if you do it often enough. Pouring beer, eating pizza, swiping the Metro card.

Historic Neir’s Tavern signs five-year lease agreement to remain in Woodhaven

On Thursday, Oct. 29, the landlords, Ken and Henry Shi, and the tavern’s owner Loycent Gordon signed the five-year lease inside the bar, located at 87-48 78th St. The lease allows for an additional five years after the current lease ends in 2025.

The oldest bar in New York City has been the recipient of a great deal of community support, dating back to January, when the landlords threatened not to renew the lease to Gordon. The call to preserve the historic ale house – which was once used to film a scene in Martin Scorsese’s Goodfellas – made it’s way to the mayor, who came out in support of Gordon and Neir’s Tavern.

Response: Opinion

This establishment has two strikes against it.
It is leased and not owned.
It is a dying business.

Bars are a dying fad. I hope that Loycent continues to makes a living with his current
customers but starts selling off everything including what is nailed down of his establishment
as memorabilia up until the last day of his lease. Unless you own a building outright you are
at the mercy of others. Deliver the Bar up as one big empty room on the last day of the lease.
Cleaned and swept of course...........Best Wishes

How many GD times is city going to step in and save this guy's behind and that bar?

Hint if you can't run a business without constantly crying to someone for help maybe it's just not working out for you.

Owner is FDNY with a steady good gig that pays well with excellent bennies; he isn't going to be starving and out on street if this place goes under. Guy needs to pull up his big boy pants and learn how to run that bar well, or let it go..
