The next generation of subway trains will provide a new commuting experience. They will be open-ended, meaning riders will be able to safely walk between them as their trains speed down the tracks.

"It's supposed to allow better circulation, better movement. That's only good if people aren't blocking the doors, which some New Yorkers continue to do," said MTA Board Member Andrew Albert.

The open-ended cars, a style known as open gangway, are common in transit systems outside the U.S.

The MTA has asked Kawasaki to manufacture 20 of them to test the concept here in the city. The contract provides the MTA with the option of ordering hundreds more.

"There's a whole new learning experience that's gonna come out of it. Some of it's really exciting and some of it's more challenging," said Lisa Daglian, Director of the Permanent Citizens Advisory Committee to the MTA.

I have visions of enormous guys yelling "GANGWAY" and charging in, mowing down bystanders.

1 hobo will stink up the whole train. Or some guy smoking weed. Not to mention bedbugs will be free to travel. Gross.

Add a pair of transit cops to walk up and down the trains handing out tickets and booting the bums.

Sucks. We all see those characters that go from car to car, often looking to rob people sometimes. That door opening caused a sound thats like a heads up notification. Now they can wander silently.

Be easier for the rappers/singers, and break dancers now. I remember a few years ago, some of them were trying get from car to car while moving and the gangway doors were locked. They had to wait until train stopped to get to new audience for their performance.

It does sound really fun & innovative -- but, shouldn't they be spending the $$ on replacing
'switches' and track things from 1928...........you know, to help move along the HUNDREDS
of subway cars already in use?

if they have the $$ to spend on this "test pilot' and order a bunch of cars from kawasaki,
then they have to fix the tracks, switches, crumbling columns and platform whatnot....
[what's taking them so long]?

one of the BEST things they ever did since 1907 was add the: 'how long before my train arrives' monitors.

The best!
