I don't see how. What I find annoying about the practice is businesses don't make it clear BEFORE you enter that they only take cards. Sometimes I want to pay with cash to avoid overspending, and I've went to a few places and they're like OH we don't take cash after you have waited in line. For the most part, I rarely walk around with cash, but when I want to be firm about how much I spend, I will take cash out specifically for that, otherwise I walk out spending double what I planned because it is so easy to swipe and go.
Besides, accepting cash doesn't cost businesses anything. There's no "transaction fee" like there is with cards. Apparently several other cities have passed similar legislation. https://www.cbsnews.com/news/san-fra...arms-the-poor/
So far, I've been in only a few business that didn't take cash and it's annoying because they are also the types of businesses that have those cheap iPad terminals that ask you for a tip for the privilege of being rung up for something.
I agree that in person businesses should be required to take cash. It's not interference in the free market. It says right on every bill "This note is legal tender for all debts public and private".
The USA has never been a free market society. Megacorps have been bribing and lobbying the government to crush their competition and give them an unfair advantage for over a hundred years.
Sure, you can force business to accept cash, but business can have a policy say, “we don’t want your business with our own discretion without any explanation”. Done and done!
I don't like businesse that are cashless, but that is their choice and they shouldn't be forced to accept cash. A lot of businesses went cashless to reduce employee theft.
