So this never happened in the '90s? Only difference was back then it wasn't documented
Wake up, the subway has always been crap to ride.
I used to ride the subway as a kid in the 90s and did not see the kind of bizarre insanity I see today. Psychotropic medication compliance has definitely decreased, dramatically.
We shifted from an inpatient to outpatient focus on treating mental illness. Because of deinstitutionalization, and the shift in focus to halfway homes and BS like that, we increasingly now have to deal with these psychopaths in our communities instead of out in the "Farm" which Creedmor essentially used to be. Away from major hubs. Around 2006-2007 most of these psychiatric facilities nationwide have shuttered, downsized and sold land and the recession just sealed the deal.
Prior to the recession there were not large amounts of crazies walking around to the concentration level we have today. Now the subway is their toilet and bedroom. The Ghouliani campaigns generally kept them off the streets compared to the Bloomberg era. There are now a large amount of homeless mentally ill that come from other states which was not the case prior to the recession.

While this is not new for NYC, it has MOST certainly worsened in the last couple of years. It is almost unavoidable now a days. And not just on the subway, but on the streets, in local businesses, etc. And whether its documented or not, most of us are experiencing this overall downward shift. Quality of life is decreasing all around.
Opinion:
Rode the trains since the 60's.
Physically escorted people who were a threat to me as in this
example off the trains number of times. Can't do it today. Too
much to lose as the criminal has more rights than the law abiding
citizen. Charles Bronson behavior is no longer condoned or respected
in New York City.
Good thing this poor guy won't have to pay any bail, it would be a real hardship for this benevolent soul
