My company gives us upto $270/month pre-tax for transit related purchases . They say it has to be used for going to and from work. Sometimes I go to gym on way to work which adds extra cost. Has anyone ever been audited for how they use the money?

Dude, everything is auditable. Management and internal audit might be aware of the abuse but turn a blind eye to it.

I have a card issued as well, but who cares? It's unlimited.

Mine did the same thing, they gave us a debit card. It looks like a normal visa debit card but I tried using it at a bodega and it didn't work. I assume it only works on MTA machines.

Nothing to worry about if you play by the book. I leave all the worrying to those trying to pull a fast one.

Found this blog article that says you can use it for any transit trips, even uber ( work or not work related ). He claims there is no way IRS has manpower to audit this:

If the spirit of the law is to encourage more public transit use, then it should not matter what the letter of the law says...

I've bought plane tickets with the commuter benefits. Honestly, I wouldn't worry about.
