NYPD top cop peddling ‘false narratives’ about dangers of bail reform, City Council warns

First, that means 84 crimes could have easily been prevented. That number may seem small to you, but I'm sure you'd have a different perspective if you were one of the 84 victims. Regarding the other 1,138 crimes, that's a sizeable increase for one month, and are likely the result of the anti-law enforcement policies and attitudes of De Blasio and his administration. In any case, it's undeniable that NYC is going backwards.
But how does this make us more vulnerable to assault, robbery, murder and rape?
To be honest I don't care if overall crime has increased. Crime is a vague term that includes vandalism and snacks stolen from a bodega. Those crimes are predominantly committed by misguided teens who may not have violent tendencies.
I only need to know does this new bail law let suspected gang members and psychos who commit FELONY grade assault, trafficking, rape and homicide go free?
Stats are very much politically guided in this city. The only one that isn't as debatable is murder-homicide and/or rape. Other crimes, can and are down graded at both the grass roots level, and from the District Attorney's office. It depends on what the motivation is to prosecute.
Crimes like robbery (a felony) can be down graded to petite larceny (a misdmeanor),...a crime like Assault Felony, can be down graded to Assault Misdemeanor, Criminal Mischief Felony can be down graded to a misdemeanor.
WHy do that? because a Commanding Officer of a precinct does NOT want those numbers increased on his watch, because he/she wants to be promoted to Chief or a full Inspector. if those numbers do go up, then that CO may punish (in many ways) his subordinates...thereby those subordinates are now under pressure to actually downgrade those crimes that would normally be a felony.
It happens all the time. THat's why I take every crime stat with a grain of salt...the only ones that really can't be downgraded are the first two that I mentioned. Everything else is pretty subjective and a judgement call at the time that the report is being taken.

it's fine you don't agree with the law but don't lie about it for your own political narrative.
I live in Nassau County, and the witness information *was* released to the defense attorneys pursuant to the judge's modification of the witness's protective order back in December. There is no direct link YET only because they haven't found who did it. Once they do, they will know if there is a link or not.
What this new law does is directly hurt victims, businesses, and will likely result in victims being killed before court date. Businesses that are victimized by robbery or shoplifting will see the same criminal out the next day. As long as the crime isn't committed with a weapon the judge has to free the suspect and set for a trial date later.
If someone breaks into your home, as long as they did not threaten you with a weapon. They are released.
All car theft as long as your property was not taken by force, out with a court date. So basically all these criminals will not be held, will be free to commit more crime. I wonder what will be the backlog of court hearing. Many will probably skip court and keep doing crime until they are caught again and released on another court date.
Before bail reform, they were fed and lived in jail. Now they have to go out and make a living.

Thanks , this makes sense.
However it draws attention to the real problem here which is not bail but politics entrenched in the system which encourages too much plea bargaining of potentially heinous criminals.
