First they pushed for $15/hr. minimum wage. Then came PTO and other bennies that made a job formerly entry level and or for the busted who couldn't do better nearly good as a full time gig. Now they're back wanting more. First on that list would be "last in first out" laws in terms of termination. Because that works so well with unions.
Automation's coming for them, and many others, so it's going to be a pyrrhic victory if they land this
Really don't understand mindset behind these people. If you don't like your job, and feel can do better there's the door, don't let it hit you on way out.
OTOH if "fast food" or whatever is best you can do, then things are what they are, and no it isn't some vast conspiracy to keep whoever down.
Retail at all and many levels is learning fast to do more with less persons. You're seeing more and more self serve kiosks which IMHO is a great thing.
Local RA got self serve kiosks and it has done the place a world of good. Can grab what I need, pay and get the eff out. This as opposed to what was normal previously; any time of day or night long lines that stretched deep down into aisles of store.
It's not like this was unexpected. When it comes to hourly employees it's been like this for many decades. Whenever there was a across the line pay raise there was nearly always something lost. That loss may have been as small as a workforce cut at each location or numerous other items that have been lost over time. Like; Day of rest law where a person couldn't be worked more than 6 days in a row, now there are people who work 10 days in a row (the line for 6 days in a row was removed thus making the day off in the beginning week 1 at the beginning and the other at the end of week 2). Like; Split shifts; Work 3.5 hours and day is over or have numerous hour break and work another 3.5 hour shift later in the day. Like; Benefits available for all no matter if PT/FT with reasonable deductions. Like; COL pay increases. Like; Bonuses or profit sharing. Like; Stock purchase plans where one could purchase company stock at a discount. Like; Commissions with reasonable thresholds to pass and worthwhile weekly payouts. Like; Night and weekend hourly differentials. And the list goes on.
So those of you who are in union jobs, ~$60,000/yr w/o OT for collecting trash, who've never seen a loss take a moment to think about all the others who have lost over the decades who even now at $15/hr works out to be less then those who worked hourly positions in the 1980's.
Automation's coming for them, and many others, so it's going to be a pyrrhic victory if they land this
As much as I hate automation in that industries (including the fast food industry) that got wealthy in large part due to increased worker productivity--yet they didn't share in the wealth with their workers--the demands by the fast food industry now (particularly this first in, last out mess . . . the $15 wage was excessive, but didn't make me support automation) is making me pray for automation to take charge. I am all for paying fast food workers more. But this is beyond ridiculous.
