Please keep in mind that Rudy happened to ride on the national drop in crime, and it's very likely that little of it was specifically due to him.
That's not accurate. The crime was so bad here that it contributed to the National crime index. When crime went down here, it went down nationally. It was Rudy's tough on crime stance and the Broken windows policy that drove crime down. Those policies worked well and were adopted by other cities and worked for them too. I recall the year when the City was desperate to get the murder rate under 1000 murders for the year. I think we finished around 996. That was considered a huge success when you take into account that just two years earlier murders were in about 2600. These results didn't just happen. They were forced into effect by a pitbull Mayor and tough as nails police Commissioner.

Opinion:
I have been down this road of opinions. Look at the numbers without cherry picking. His record has not been broken since.

He was a great mayor and probably saved hundreds of lives through his crime-fighting initiatives. I was there during the criminal chaos before he was elected. It was so out of control that even cop-hating progressives voted for him.

I strongly disagree with his treatment of Milken while federal prosecutor however.
