Why don't people who miss 1970s/1980s NY just move to Newark or Baltimore? Why should one of the worlds greatest cities return to being a hole when there are so many places in America where you can get that same feeling:

Parts of Chicago
Baltimore
Detroit
Philadelphia
St Louis

More Locally:

Trenton, NJ
Paterson, NJ
Newark, NJ
Bridgeport, CT
Newburgh, NY

I don't understand when people who *want* a chaotic, gritty urban enviornment don't simply move somewhere they can get that.

Also, who are these people that really totally and completely miss the 1970s and 1980s in NYC? Isn't it just attributes of it or their own youth that they're missing? I haven't met anyone in real life who lived through NYC in the 1970s and 1980s who wasn't nostalgic for certain things or had some fond memories or missed having cheap rent (or sometimes pissed they sold property or didn't buy property in the 90s), but that's not quite the same thing as missing being mugged or harassed.

It's funny when 18 year old activists want those days back.

Come on, I'm sure you realize that there can be many reasons that people look back fondly a few decades, that had nothing to do with the grittiness of the city.

The difference is this. Even at its lowest points in thevery 70s, NYC was still pretty much the center of the universe. Some of the worst slums in the country were here, but it was still the center of finance, art, culture, etc. So people could live cheap and dirty, but still have access (or at least proximity), to the best the world has to offer, and because of that, there was a lot of mobility if you had talent.

You don't get that in Baltimore or Detroit.

I’m really interested in your answer to my question regarding your “red line” for the bail reforms.

I’ll never accept any level of criminal apologism. It’s disgusting that otherwise good people accept any form of crime at all, much less “poo poo” the city slipping backwards.

Also, they don't have to leave NYC if they wat that. Brownsville is still grimy.
