...27 cases of scammers attemtping to prey on elderly New Yorkers in recent weeks. The NYPD calls it a "grandparent scam," and says it has resulted in seniors losing tends of thouands of dollars so far. The NYPD has made a video to warn older New Yorkers about it.
I can never take a call from a number I don't know. Last time I did, it was an IRS scam from some number in Long Island. Yeah right.
Me too. A guy with an Indian accent saying I'm going to jail unless...I give him a call. Yeah, right.
I also get someone speaking in rambling Chinese from time to time.
The sad thing is that I actually know of someone who got scammed in this way. It was the mother-in-law of someone in my family. This happened in Oregon.
My older relatives who live in a town in New England have a senior center that devotes a fair amount of time educating the seniors how not to fall victim to this. They also do outreach to the CVS stores etc. in the area that sell gift cards. When said older relative went to CVS to buy gift cards for the "giving tree" at church, the CVS clerk quizzed her about who the gift cards were for. When my relative explained about church, the cashier said they had been trained to make sure older people are not buying gift cards while falling victim to this type of scam.
The article doesn't mention it, but a lot of times scammers ask for gift cards instead of cash.

I also get those robocalls. "rambling Chinese from time to time."
by the way, adding your number to the national do not call register actually does help cut down robo calls by a lot. Even if you added it a long time ago add it again because they've dropped numbers over the years for some reason
Nothing New. Had a clint get nailed on the grandson in Mexican jail 5 years ago.
I get a couple a week of one sort or the other. Got the SS one about an hour ago.
I would note that we get virtually all the calls on our old land line. We have a couple of smart phones but do not get this class of message. Get other annoying calls but none of the "GrandDad" sort.
According to all the robocalls I've received over the years the IRS is after me and will confiscate everything I own down to my underwear if I don't press 1 immediately!
