I Mean I wish i could recommend a lot of GOOD places for you to live in brooklyn but un fortunately I cant, i mean if it was queens I could tell you in a heart beat because im from the BX (bronx) , But i would say live in places like bay ridge ,dyker heights , Basically southern brooklyn, and park slope, . Its a nice mix of latinos, whites, native Ny'ers! I'm puerto rican and I USED to live in Park slope. I'm not saying its All Peaches because if i did, i'd be lieing haha. I have some familia that live there and when I visit, there's is rarely any drama or ppl getting "shot up" but that's just my opinion, I've lived in new york my whole life and nothing to me has changed, its still the best place ever,. And I no there's some ppl (friends family etc) saying not to live in ny but there's GOOD things about it like the rockafella tree for chsistmas or the ball drop,106 & park, times square , and wait until u see the ACTUAL CITY ! You will b carrying alot of shopping bags after your wife sees all those stores, its full of oppurtunities so when ur finished with the job at NYU , you can get a job ANYWHERE and b sucsessfull, andd all that stuff is close so you dont have to drive 9 n 10 hours to get to the other side of the state like california!

I know this thread is a couple of years old, but if the OP wanted to live without a car, they could look in Sheepshead Bay (around Nostrand Avenue) or in the Marine Park area.

Both areas have bus service to Brooklyn College (the B44 for Sheepshead Bay down Nostrand Avenue, which they are trying to make faster, and the B41 down Flatbush Avenue for Marine Park), and because they are further from the subway, the OP would get more value for their money.
