WE used to go there often when we lived in queens. If you like exploring, its a cool place to drive around and just check out stuff. It has a very creepy vibe to it. You can drive out west to Riis Park and then turn around and head east till you get to Lido beach. In between you will find some good bad and the ugly. But the whole area just feels forgotten by god.
Again, if you like old NY type areas like me, you will love it. Id say drive around, its safer.

Brighton Beach for me. Extremely strong and cheap drinks are available year round. Also great BBQ (shashlik). I still remember dating this Ukrainian girl who claimed to only drink once in a while. Oh boy, those Slavs can really stomach an incredible amount of alcohol. 2 small bottles of "Rusky Standard" later and her face was still pale while I was seeing 3x images of everything.
