I have only visited to this branch once as I am not really a fan of modern art, but I still think its permanently closing to be a sad cultural event for NYC.

Oh damn,

This is the first I am hearing about the closure. I enjoyed it as the old Whitney Museum and then more recently as the overflow wing for the MMA.
The news saddens me immensely.

I hope it isn't a first in a number of closing.

So it'll be the temporary home to the Frick Collection, then what's after that, condos?

Duane Reade, a Chase branch, and a Starbucks.

Met/ Breuer was "Pay What You Wish" for New Yorkers. I wonder if the Frick will do the same.

The old Frick admission was $22 for adults and $17 for seniors, a bit too high. But they were free Sunday afternoon I believe.

The Frick collection is truly wonderful and everyone should see it at least once.

Maybe on the first floor. They could build a pretty big building on that site. I wonder if it's landmarked?

Edit: Unfortunately, it apparently is.

The Frick is now free on Wednesdays from 2:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m. Also, on the first Friday evening of the month (except September and January), museum admission and gallery programs will be free from 6:00 p.m. to 9:00 p.m.

Being that Breuer was part of the MET it has always been pay what you wish for NYers. I doubt that the Frick will do that.

When it was the Whitney it was not free, but my late husband/partner had a corporate membership so we went every time they had a new exhibition...for free.

I am not used to paying for museums.

Anyone who is interested, the Jewish Museum (E. 92nd and Fifth) is free on Saturdays (open at Noon.) They have many good shows.
