Today I was surprised to see an omni nyc transit box in the back of a bus. I'm guessing that's one of the ways fares will be paid.
Personally I'm not comfortable using a credit card tap and go system for transit. Taking a credit card out every time I need to take the bus doesn't seem like a secure method.
Don't know about buses, but MTA has really made progress installing OMNY readers in subways. Am guessing with lower ridership during pandemic crisis plus things being shut down overnight has made things easier.
I took 3 bus rides yesterday and all were free. On my second bus ride, the driver threw off 2 young passengers without masks, then nearly took the bus out of service because of a passenger who took off their mask during the ride and later shouted at a different passenger for not putting on their mask before boarding the bus. Since the ride was free, nobody who could complain about the bus ride taking longer than it should!
