The IRS has figured this out. People who work traditionally tipped jobs have an assumed tip amount added to their taxable income.

Think of my 20 percent tip instead of 50 percent as me withholding your taxes and let’s move on.
I’ve tipped 30% or so through the pandemic so far, though I’ve also eaten out a lot less since it’s pretty convenient to do so when you’re working from home.
His reasoning is pretty laughable. "Restaurant workers have been made to keep working, to put their health on the line..." They have not been "made to keep working." Most of them haven't worked in months and/or during the height of the pandemic. I'm sorry, what do you think all of us who have been working the entire time have been doing exactly? Cashiers at Key Food are paid like garbage as well and they have been working the entire time and coming into contact with far more people than servers.
Restaurants are hurting. Encouraging patrons to come back when people are still reluctant and nervous while also hoping they can spend money is what should be happening. Why would someone equate being able to eat breakfast at the diner (which I did the other day) to someone who easily has money for luxury vacations? That's more than a leap.
So we'll all stay home instead and let all of the restaurants die. I'm guessing that's what the author wants. Just read some of the comments---he sounds like a treasure.
we have started to eat out at our favorite places that are open for the outdoor seating. I feel that since I was an essential worker and did not lose any money during this pandemic, and the restaurant people did, I tip very, very good, as I feel they have lost so much money, and I was fortunate enough to be still working.
These are places where they know us already and treat us like gold. I could not be cheap, it isn't in my nature.
Same when the people deliver the food to my apartment and have to walk up the 4 flights of stairs.
I don't like cheap people, it is one thing if you cannot afford to do so.
