The drivers are out of control, there’s always accidents. Some idiots drive at 45 mph in the left lane then you have the crazy 90 mph drivers weaving in and out of traffic. There are frequent slow downs too so if you’re not paying attention then you’re at risk of rear ending.

Do police even pull cars over? I know there is a barely a shoulder from the Verrazano to sheepshead bay so I don’t see how that can be done so easily.

Best to avoid.

It’s frustrating for sure, and when it’s precipitating, fuhgettaboutit. The section with the new concrete bridges and wider lanes/shoulders near the water is markedly better, though. Now if only that engineering could be applied to the much tighter stretches right after the Verrazano and before and after Kennedy, that would be amazing. It will never be perfect, but there are definitely ways it could be improved to further ease congestion; that could potentially mitigate the impact of the aforementioned aggressive drivers, as slower drivers would feel more comfortable to keep to the right, and the race cars can have ample room to maneuver. But really, quite a few of the highways in the city and the NYC metro area at large could benefit from some sort of widening, or even addition of shoulders, if any land is available, even the smallest addition could dramatically improve the “feel” of the road. It can be done; if they can practically rebuild LaGaurdia while pretty much fully operating, they can make it happen on the roads too. But of course, it will cost $$$

The Belt has been like that for many years. The part that was redone is better but then it narrows again and you're back in misery. Better hope you don't have to drive on the Belt on a day when a tractor trailer gets lost, finds its way onto the Belt and gets stuck under a bridge.

This is why NYC needs to put up signs like NJ does. Keep right except for passing. This keeps the left lane clear for those who wants to go 90 or above the speed limit and keeps the sunday drivers from holding up traffic.

Nothing worse than trying to get somewhere on a highway and there is a station wagon or SUV cruising below the speed limit in the left lane with a big open space enough for 10 cars to fit.

It’s only going to get worse. The lawlessness you are seeing on the streets now will be extended out onto the roads as police are now backing off and the aggressive people will see it and get even more bolder.

I'm always stuck in a 5mph traffic jam on the belt. I'd rather deal with speeders/slow drivers than a soul draining belt traffic jam.

NYC in general is a free for all traffic. You got morons doing 40mph on the left lane on the BQE or Belt at all times and especially Uber cars. I frequently see a moron driving a Honda Accord with Uber tags driving like a senior citizen on the road. While BMWs are flying by over 75mph, that's a recipe for traffic fatalities when the speed differential of two cars is too great. You have transplants that wouldn't go over 50mph speed limit. How many times I broke out of a pack of slow traffic then looking behind the mirror at a wall of cars.
