There were originally 2 elevated lines on the east side along with the current underground line. The city tore down the elevated lines on 2nd ave and 3rd ave because they were considered to be eyesores and blighted the community.
Way back when the city planned to replace the elevated line on 2nd ave with an underground line, but because of a lack of money and just general stalling the thing never got built, and that is why we are in the current situation.
There is fuding to extend the Q line up 3 stops to 96th street, and work is currently progressing on that. The completion date of the extension of the Q is 2015. Beyond that no fuding has been secured to finish the remainder of the 2nd avenue subway.

Apparently people will pay before getting on the bus across Fordham Road, so the bus won't have to wait for each person to pay. I hope that it will have some dedicated lane because the traffic on Fordham Rd. is ridiculous.
The 2nd Ave subway sounds insanely expensive, and I don't know that I think it's worth it. I guess a lot of it is the cost of labor, which really cheap back in the day the system was built.
I'd really like to see the D train express service run at all times. That would be a comparatively inexpensive improvement that would benefit so many people.

Interesting how is that supposed to work? People flash some sort of pass or something? I'm trying to think how that would work. They already have bus lanes on much of Fordham Rd. Thing is the buses make too many stops.
I'm a big proponent of the D running express a lot more. Sure would make my life a whole lot easier. Thing is the other train, the crappy B is so unreliable that they stop it at 145 and the D has to run local a lot to make up for it. During evening rush hour it usually stop running express around 7PM, which is too early. I think if they extended it that would really help the Fordham area a lot. A lot more well-intentioned people would move up there if the D ran express more. In the mornings when it runs express, the commute to Manhattan is a breeze.

When the D runs express you can get downtown in no time. It's not like they would have to do any construction to extend express service. All they have to do is run the train (and pay for the personnel.) Maybe we should start writing to our representative, whoever that is.
Sorry I can't remember any more details about the Fordham Road bus proposal. Hopefully there will be less stops too.

I dont' know exactly what the MTA's plan is, but I've seen the same setup on the light rail in Hoboken/Jersey City and over in San Francisco. With the light rail in NJ you purchase a ticket, and put it into a machine that time stamps it before your train arrives. Once you have that stamp you can ride around for 90 minutes before it expires. You just get on the train, no putting a metro-card upon entering.
The catch is that there are random cops checking your tickets upon exiting the train sometimes. If you get caught trying to skip the fare you'll get a fine like $50 or $100.

Excellent idea Pete! I'm gonna find out who the rep is and write to him/her.
I guess the Bx12 is going to be this BRT? I guess that makes the most sense since Fordham Rd has way too many steep hills to do a rail line.
I know the Bx12 goes from 207th/Broadway to Co-op City - so I'm guessing the express stops on the Bx12 route would be the stations?
And where would they place the stations? Pelham Parkway is ridiculous wide and they could place them in the inner lanes but how would it get done on Fordham Rd and 207th Street?
The following links are not BRT related, but the MTA's plan to make dedicated bus lanes on 34th Street and 5th/Madison Av. for the current routes that run on them:
