Doesn’t take away from the reality that the city needs those people back. If de Blasio’s position was merely about begging, I would take less issue with it. But it was a veiled attack on the very people who find his dreams.

If this plea fails, they'll just make laws that make it illegal for rich people to move. Their only motivation in life is to continue to suck money from those who have it. This isn't a conspiracy.
They’d do so if they could. And they’ll certainly try to make it as difficult to not pay nyc taxes, but thankfully the case law on this issue is pretty clear and against such a proposition.

The way around it is to heavily tax the 2nd homes (here) of those who they're after. Haven't they tried this already with foreigners?

So suddenly the Dems need the evil privileged wealthy white people to keep the city from turning into a 3rd world hell hole.

Too bad. You made your bed. Now you get to lay in it.

This isn't just about COVID although COVID fast tracked working remotely by many years. The requirements to work onsite are no longer. Wealthy people are looking at how DeBumio has turned the city into an unsafe haven for criminals while Cuomo has hammered the economy which will take many years to recover. So much of the attractiveness of living in NYC is gone.

The city needs whoever wants to stay, it's that simple

Everybody is free to come or go

It's not that serious.

You're very wrong on this one. The numbers don't lie. The Takers don't pay the bills. The city absolutely does need these people to pay taxes or services will be cut immensely (as they should be anyway).

A few years ago, NJ had to completely revise its budget because ONE man moved to Florida. One billionaire who was anticipated to pay some insane amount of taxes that year. They begged him to stay, he refused, so the entire budget had to be rewritten.

It's easy to spout leftist catch phrases about the 1%, but the numbers don't lie. When they stay away, money dries up. You can't poo-poo this one away with witty forum posts.

See below how closely high-tax leftist states monitor and control their rich to ensure the Takers are provided for:

Anyway, this site says top 5% income makes $250K+ and that's 32% of the households of Manhattan. That's a lot of people to be dismissing as inconsequential (or worse, threatening) considering many of them will have the means to work remotely.

NY State has a population around 19.5 million, and 1% of them is 19,500 people. Assuming that at least half of that are the underage kids who do not earn or pay taxes themselves, the 1% of adult population would be at least around 9,750 people. The real 1% is probably much smaller because people have more than one kid on average. The real number of 1%ers in NYS + NYC is probably closer to 5,000. This 1% generates about 45% of tax revenue. I did not dismiss your 32% of households with income above $250k, because they generate most of the remaining 55% of tax revenue. If the top 1% of people pay almost the same amount of tax as the next 4% people, that means that the loss of one rich household from the state or city equals the loss of four upper middle class households on average... but with the few hundred top taxpayers, averages become meaningless, and the loss of one of those equals the loss of a couple of thousand of upper middle class taxpayers.

You can't force people to stay, that's all I'm saying

Billionaire investor Carl Icahn to leave New York for Florida

From September 2019

NY is going through a very hard reset at the moment.

Seems crazy to think that out of a city of millions, a few hundred or thousand people leaving could decimate the place.

cuomo is right and deblasio as usual is dead wrong.
1 percent of the people pay 50 percent of the taxes. they're already fleeing like crazy. cuomo correctly realizes more will flee if their taxes are raised. meanwhile deblasio who had this city bleeding money BEFORE covid19 wants to raise them. it's unreal this guy is the mayor of NYC. but of course he proudly does his photo ops painting black lives matter on the street while he ruins this city.
