How was your (your kid's) experience? Do kids tend to stick with the school through to high school or do a large number of people end up transitioning out of there before they reach the end? Any things in particular to note or be aware of?

No first hand info, but this site notes that many kids leave after 6th grade to attend Hunter, and after 8th grade to attend a specialized high school https://insideschools.org/school/01M539

A friend's son went there. I think he had a good experience but I don't have details. He ended up going to Stuyvesant for high school.

elementary and middle school is excellent, high school is nothing special

they had a bat**** crazy principal for a while, but she may have moved on since I last checked

The parents association will expect you to contribute at least $1000 per year

Do they expect parents to contribute a lot of time at and for the school?

Kind of surprised by what you said about high school. US News ranking doesn’t give the highest slot, but it still got a #18 slot for public high schools for the Tri-State Area and it’s a lot of schools.

They have lots of parent meetings but no one has to do anything. On the money side if you don't pay up nothing will happen they can't force you, the worse that can happen is some parents talking behind your back

You should be able to find some informative threads here:

Following! My kid has a tiny tiny shot of attending it next year... probably won't happen, but I'm holding on to the hope because this year, everything else about schools is one bit of bad news after another.

Yea, I like the idea because it’s K-12 so the whole NYC school system labyrinth is pretty much done and settled by default.
